Primary School Workshop

Your Place, Your History

Your Place, Your History is a bespoke local history workshop about your village/town/part of city for primary schools.

The students will become History Detectives by using census records, newspaper reports, old maps, photographs and other historical documents to discover what life was like in your place during the 19th and early 20th Century.

The workshop meets the National Curriculum Aims for History. Students will have a greater understanding of the methods of historical enquiry as they analyse primary sources and make considered interpretations about the past. It also supports KS1 - changes within living memory and significant historical events, people and places in their own locality and KS2 - a local history study.

Furthermore as a local historian, I am particularly interested in how national and international events like the World Wars, Industrial Revolution or Empire affect local people and this is incorporated into the workshop. Other topics the workshop looks at are: child labour, social class, economics, wealth, cultural pastimes, and education. The children are encouraged to compare this to their own experiences and judge how aspects of life have changed. By interrogating primary sources, the children are encouraged to make historical claims about their place and to understand how these interpretations of history are formed.

Each workshop is developed to meet the needs of your class. Due to the availability of primary sources the workshop can focus on any decade between 1840 and 1910 (including World War 1) and can support any aspect of your local history.

‘I just wanted to thank you for coming to Colerne this week and leading such an enjoyable and informative session with our Year 5/6 classes. The workshop was so well planned and organised, and the kids were really engaged throughout. It was perfect for our local history topic this term- you have inspired them to find out more about their village.’
