Local History Walking Tours

Would you like to take your class on a history walk of your local area, but need support from an expert?

I am a local historian who develops and delivers bespoke walking tours for people of all ages. I can lead your class around your local area, supporting them to discover its history, its buildings, and its people in a fun and engaging way. The tour can be tailored to support any area of the curriculum such as maps, the Victorians or transport, and any age - EYFS, KS1 or KS2.

Before the walk, I run a short 10 minute interactive introduction session in the classroom. I use old maps of the area to encourage the children to think about how the area may have changed and what we might encounter on the walk. Depending on the route and area you wish to explore, the walk lasts about 1.5 hours. Throughout the walk I use old photographs and other documents to show how places looked in the past and to explain what they were used for.

Back in the classroom, follow-up activities can also be delivered, by myself or the class teacher, that consolidate and build on the knowledge and skills learnt on the walk. These might include analysing old photographs, drawing their own maps, or interrogating primary sources such as census returns or newspaper articles.

Teacher CPD session

I also offer CPD sessions for teachers to raise awareness of the local history opportunities available in their local environment. This will include matching your history curriculum plans to places you could visit and taking the staff on a local history walk as well as introducing them to primary sources available to them.

Just wanted to say the biggest thank you for visiting our school last week and your brilliant walks to support our Hullavington week. All five classes and the staff really enjoyed it.
